Given your passion, I thought you might enjoy some of my ‘String Urchins’ (click here)
I have found all of my urchins scouring the local beaches, washed up & dried by the sun on the sand.
I clean the urchins by soaking them in a weak solution of bleach for a couple of hours. This has proved very successful with a nil attrition rate & no smell.

Your site is great, I have managed to find a name for just about all my urchins, except for two, which are a problem because you only show a test and I think I have the whole thing (and I refuse to denude mine just to see if I am right).

Allereerst wil ik je mijn grootste waardering melden voor je schitterende website. Beroepsmatig ben ik nogal kritisch, maar met deze site scoor je wel héél hoog cijfer. Mede door de ontdekking van deze site en de vondst van het boekje van Ashley is mijn sluimerende interesse in zeeëgels ineens geëxplodeerd.

What should a collector of echinoids do when one collects 'live'
specimens. Should one keep the spines ... or remove the spines.
If the former - my experience as a child was that the 'animal' smelled a great deal for some time ... how should one prepare a specimen obtained live?
When I was a child we simply 'boiled' the creature and removed the spines this way - though it often caused the test to fragment into pieces- particularly with slate pencil urchins ...

So, to make a test or keep spines? What to do and how.

I'm a graphic designer in Sydney by the way, and am eternally inspired by the colour, texture and shape of these remarkable creatures. Very nice site. I also collect recent echinoids. I use them as a type collection to study fossil echinoids. Most of the material I have, you already have but I can get a lot of recent sand dollars from the Gulf Coast. Again great site
